Tsumago - The Old Samurai Town

There was a main road from Tokyo to Kyoto named Nakasendo, can be translated to "road through the central mountains". During this time, Japan was ruled by the Shogunate. A scene of Samurai bearing katana, townspeople wearing simple kimonos and peasants selling their farm products. Travelers coming on foot all stayed in the bustling town - Tsumago.

Highly recommended to hike a preserved trail of the former Nakasendo from Tsumago to Magome. The journey between Tsumago and Magome takes about 2hours on foot, following the old footpath through the shady forest. A truely unforgettable experience !! The most beautiful sight throughout my Japan trip is none other than this.... I call this the "Postcard" town. Every picture is good for a postcard. <3 What better place for OOTD !!!
Hat: Topshop, Top: H&M, Skirt: Engell, Coat: GG5, Shoes: ASOS

 I felt my lungs inflat with the onrush of scenery - air, mountains, trees, people. I thought, this is what it is to be happy !!!

For those who are interested in walking this trail, it can be done for all ages. Heels are still not recommended ladies ;) Let's start !!

For the lucky ones, you might get to see bears too !!! Not for me since someone rang the bell super hard !! :p

Got a break thanks to this friendly old man who offered us tea ;) Arigato!!

Arrived in this surreal town!! Just a slow walk down this town clears your heart and mind.. Feels like fantasy <3

Got company for my OOTD, "photobomb" !!! Not sure who is the photobomber though.. hahaha

Wanted to experience a traditional inn and we were glad to have selected Kohsinzuka Inn. A 106 year-old house located in Ohtsumago, a bit away from Tsumagojuku. It is surrounded by Nakasendo, an old trail and a mountain stream.
Be a traveler, not a tourist !!! Living like a local !! <3
The living room
View from our room !!
The amazing home cooked dinner was a steal from this Inn, with my hot sake being warmed up using the "Irori". No pictures this time as we are busy making friends with other guests in the inn ;)

Stay tuned for my last post in Japan on Tokyo up next week !!! Sumo-wrestling and the famous Sanja festival in Asakusa..
~~~Travel makes one modest, you see what a tiny place you occupy in the world !!!~~~
Gifu - Fashion, Food & Fun
A day in Gifu - city famous for Cormorant Fishing. Not forgetting the complete steak experience for this trip - Hida beef, which melts in your mouth.
Before that, let's take a look at my OOTD ;)
Necklace, Top & Shorts: ZARA; Shoes: ASOS
Highly recommended restaurant in Gifu - Senryu. On top of the amazingly delicious Hida beef, the traditional setting is the highlight as well. An old Japanese house alongside Nagara River with view on the Gifu castle, surrounded by the Japanese garden. You can see the garden from the earlier pictures ;) Here's the entrance to this authentic Japanese Restaurant.
Each table has it's own room to ensure privacy ;)
I have to say that every single small dish tasted exquisitely good!!
Highlight goes to this slab of beef which melts in your mouth!! The garlic on top of it balance off the grease just well. For a minute I thought it was the fats that we are going to eat.... haha
Not only we had our own room, we've got our own cook as well ;p
That's the garlic by the side ;)
Got to try the crunchy potato from Japan and the amazingly sweet onions.. Even the simplest ingredient tasted heavenly... ;)
Take a walk in the backyard after this sinful meal !!! ;p
It was indeed an experience with this restaurant but there is a price to pay as well. Be prepared to spend a min of 10,000yen per person for the cheapest set with no alcohol included. Well, no pain no gain right... :p
Gifu castle is located on top of Mount Kinka with a 360-degree panoramic view of the surroundings.
Right on top ;)
Breathtaking view from the castle <3
So, Gifu is famous for Cormorant Fishing. A traditional fishing method that uses trained cormorants to catch river fish, has been practiced along Nagaragawa River in Gifu City for over 1300years. Fishing is performed every evening from 11th May to 15th Oct. Here's a short video of the almost forgotten skill. 1 master per boat.
Hope you have been enjoying my fashion and travel posts ;) Love, xoxo
Takayama - Old Town and Shirakawa-go - UNESCO world heritage site
Takayama is about 45mins train ride from Gero city. A city in the mountainous Hida region of Gifu Prefecture. To differentiate it from other places named Takayama, the city is also commonly referred to as Hida-Takayama. Takayama retains a traditional touch like few other Japanese cities, especially in it's beautifully preserved old town. It now ranks as one of the prime candidates among travelers wishing to add a rural element into their itineraries.
The southern half of the old town, especially the Sannomachi Street, survives in a particularly pretty state with many old homes, shops and my favorite sake breweries. 100yen for unlimited times of sake tasting and you get to keep the cup for souvenir !!
You can identify sake by this ball of cedar leaves hanging outside each house
This cedar ball is known as Sugidama, sometimes referred to "Sakebayashi". In the olden days, sake brewers would hang a fresh green Sugidama outside their door to signal that fresh production is on it's way. Months later, once it turned completely brown, means that the sake is ready to drink !!
Old town is my favorite part of Takayama. Every part of it looks incredibly surreal.....
As a rule long ago, but still commonly today as well, sugidama are hung just outside the front entrance to a sake brewery immediately after the first sake of the year has been pressed (like – now!). At this point, the leaves are still green, having been recently cut and used. Over the next several months, however, the green needles slowly faded to brown. It has long been said that when at long last the color had changed to brown, the sake had aged enough to be ready for drinking. - See more at: http://sake-world.com/wordpress/?p=273#sthash.rHsIzWEB.dpuf
Beautiful flowers along the way....
This is one of my favorite pic !!!
Pardon my big ass :p
  In the northeastern area of Takayama's old town stands Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine.
We stayed in Hagi Takayama (modern roykan style hotel). Not going to bore you with all my hotel room pictures. Here's one that I have to show, the view we had from their private onsen !!
Had to filter so you can clearly see the mountain covered with snow behind.. Ain't this lovely ??
I can do a showcase of the different types of Yukata after this trip !!! Love this color combination ;)
Before we end Takayama, it's food porn time ;) Recommended restaurant - Hidatakayama Kyoya !!
If you are planning a trip to Takayama, you are not going to miss the UNESCO world heritage site - Shirakawa-go. An hour bus ride to the remote mountains that span from Gifu to Toyama Prefectures. Famous for their traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old !!
Welcome to the real life fairytale....
Mesmerized !!!!
Well the rain did not dampen our mood in this beautiful place... Now I know why it has been declared the world heritage site !! More pictures of this little heaven on earth <3
Here's my OOTD !!! haha...
This place looks even more like in a fairytale during winter time !! Make this your next visit and I am sure you will be amazed by this amazing view !!
Gassho-zukuri means "constructed like hands in prayer", as the farmhouses' steep thatched roofs resemble the hands of Buddhist monks pressed together in prayer. The architectural style developed over many generations and is designed to withstand the large amounts of heavy snow that falls in the region during winter. The roofs, made without nails, provided a large attic space used for cultivating silkworms. Now sleep on that <3
Hope you have been enjoying my travel posts.. Next up on the famous cormorant fishing in Gifu and what I call the post-card town - Tsumago !! Xoxoxo....
